C-51's four amendments

Bill C-51 is now being studied by Canada's Senate.

Before the Senate is a new version of Bill C-51, containing four amendments that, we are told, should assuage widespread concerns about the sweeping powers proposed in the "anti-terror" law.

As the BCCLA delivers our full length submissions directly to the Senate, BCCLA's Senior Counsel Carmen Cheung explains in this new blog post why the four amendments made to the Bill don't even begin to address the fundamental flaws of the proposed legislation.

Read Carmen's short post on the four amendments here.

In our view, the revised language is a distinction without a difference. It is remarkable that the broad and sustained outpouring of public opposition to Bill C-51 seems to have pushed the government to make these amendments, but this Bill is fundamentally flawed, and cannot be salvaged by any amendment, let alone these four here.

Thank you to every one of our supporters who have stood up across the country to oppose this Bill. Your passion for the health of our democracy is truly inspiring.

Sincerely,

Josh Paterson, Executive Director
and the BCCLA team
