Socialist tradition refers to political "consciousness" as a way to theorize the role of agency within historical struggle. It generally does not refer to "psychology" of the individual nor analyze the multiple psycho-social pathologies involved in the avoidance of rational collective planning. But the seeming incapacity for rational collective strategic response in the face of catastrophic climate change can increasingly only be described as absurd and insane. "Climate Mobilization" calls for revolutionary transformation based upon a sober and lucid acceptance of the "truth" as a form of both personal mental health as well as social and political emancipation from the forces causing climate crisis.
If this organization/movement is calling for "war-time mobilization" ecosocialists must ask "what kind of war are we talking about"? Is WWII the appropriate frame, or are other historical examples more relevant such as the 1871 Paris Commune, or the pre-WWII Spanish civil war? Is this a populist war with no "enemies" other than climate change itself or are we fighting a global working class civil war of independence from corporate occupation of public space and the continued commodification of nature? If we insist on recognizing the truth of climate science and its requirement for massive change, should we not also ruthlessly examine together the "truth" of the political and economic landscape?
This month's SCNCC interview welcomes Margaret Klein Salamon, the Founder and Director of Climate Mobilization, one of the few organizations demanding action that is commensurate with the breadth, depth and urgency of the climate threat. Come help us bridge the Climate Mobilization community with the System Change Not Climate Change network as well as with the larger climate justice movement in an invigorating discussion of common interests and strategies!
North American Phone Conference
Monday, July 25 - 8:30pm (eastern) or 5:30pm (pacific)
Join a special on-line and phone-in interview with Margaret Klein Salamon, Founder of Climate Mobilization.
Margaret Klein Salamon is the founder and director of The Climate Mobilization. Margaret earned her PhD in clinical psychology from Adelphi University and also holds a BA in social anthropology from Harvard. Though she loved being a therapist, Margaret felt called to apply her psychological and anthropological knowledge to solving climate change. She began sharing her ideas for organizing for a WWII-scale climate mobilization to save civilization and the natural world on her blog The Climate Psychologist, and, along with Ezra Silk, and a host of other allies, advisors, and team-members, built the group from an idea. She lives with her husband in Brooklyn. Margaret has suggested these articles for anyone interested in some advance reading in preparation for the call-in: Leading the Public into Emergency Mode (most recent & important) and The Transformative Power of Climate TruthModerator: Brad Hornick, PhD Candidate, Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, Canada; active with System Change Not Climate Change (SCNCC)

SCNCC is a joint Canadian and US coalition of ecosocialists and fellow travellers united in the belief that capitalism is driving climate change and that a radical international grassroots movement can stop it. Green capitalism is a dead end. So are liberal parties like the US Democrats and the corporate friendly approach of most Green NGOs. SCNCC believes the climate justice movement will unite with the labour movement and other struggles for liberation to create an alternative to the upside down world shaped by fossil fuels and corporate power. Another world is possible, but we need more ecosocialists to make it happen.
