New Report: Sharing Our Realities: Life on Disability Assistance in British Columbia
Looking beyond the numbers to focus on real-life stories, Sharing Our Realities: Life on Disability Assistance in British Columbia finds a remarkable consensus between people with disabilities, income assistance workers, and even the findings of the government’s own disability consultation about what ails the system and what is needed to improve the lives of people with disabilities.
“The message is that we don’t have enough for basics like food and shelter,” said Frank, who receives disability assistance, “and this makes our disabilities worse. We are losing our health. We are losing our homes. We are losing our lives. This is a crisis.”

The report is co-authored by Citizens for Accessible Neighbourhoods (CAN) and the BC Poverty Reduction Coalition and co-sponsored by the BC Disability Caucus, BCGEU, Together Against Poverty Society and Raise the Rates.

Join Dan Meades, provincial co-ordinator for the Transition House Association of Newfoundland and Labrador, for a presentation on the success of Newfoundland and Labrador’s poverty reduction strategy. Having shared one of the worst poverty rates in Canada with BC, they have reduced their poverty rate and food insecurity significantly through their poverty reduction plan. BC still has one of the highest poverty rates and is now the only province without a poverty reduction plan.
Dan will be joined by Iglika Ivanova, Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, and other local speakers to highlight the cost of poverty in BC and how we could achieve justice for all through a poverty reduction plan for BC.

Only 55% of eligible voters voted in the last provincial election. We are hoping to help Get Out The Vote by hosting Samara Canada's Vote PopUp booths at food banks and other community hubs. The Vote PopUp booths allow community groups to simulate the voting experience by recreating a voting station and fosters interest by providing an opportunity for participants to connect their concerns and interests with the electoral process.

Don't forget to visit our election website at http://www.makepovertypublic.ca/ to learn how to take action.BC has the second highest poverty rate in Canada, but is now the only province without a poverty reduction plan. The lead-up to May’s provincial election is a window of opportunity for you to let candidates from all parties know that you want to vote for someone willing to make a commitment to a poverty reduction plan. Just as we pool our resources to provide public health care and education to all, we must work together to provide public poverty reduction. We need to Make Poverty Public.
