U OF T CAFETERIA WORKERS' QUEST FOR JUSTICE

Patricia Mahamalage, 45, has been temporarily laid off from her cafeteria job at University of Toronto’s Scarborough campus. Her employer, Aramark, told her that business is slow during the summer and that she will have her job back in September.
Summer lay-offs are the norm for cafeteria staff at UTSC, where food services are predominantly outsourced to Aramark. The multinational corporation manages multiple outlets on campus including Tim Horton’s, Pizza Pizza and Starbucks.
More than half of the 65 Aramark employees are relieved off their duties annually when campus life slows down from April to September. Read more!

Throughout the summer, Unifor members at hotels in downtown Vancouver and Victoria will be in bargaining. Members at Hotel Vancouver, the Coast Coal Harbour, the Residence Inn, and Victoria’s Hotel Grand Pacific are looking to benefit from some of the incredible profits these high-end hotels are making every year.
Three of the four contracts between the union and the hotels end within the next two months, and one ends at the end of the year. Read more!
On October 19, 2016, Finance Minister Bill Morneau introduced Bill C-27, which would bring in target benefit pension plans for the federal private sector and Crown corporations. Harper’s Conservatives had considered the target benefit plan as a replacement for employees and retirees’ guaranteed defined benefit pensions. Target benefit pensions shift all the risks of pension liabilities away from employers and governments onto the backs of employees and retirees, to be paid through reduced benefits and pensions.
