New arrests as Haft Tapeh sugar workers in Iran keep up their fight

Workers at the Haft Tapeh sugar cane plantation and mill complex in the southern Iranian city of Shush continue their actions in support of their demand for payment of massive wage and benefit arrears and recognition of their union. The fifteen workers arrested at a mass protest on July 25 have been released, but bail was set at USD 3000  - a huge sum for the workers and their families. Wage arrears for April have been selectively paid, but members of the union executive body have still not received their wages. Thousands of workers and retirees are still owed up to 4 months of wages and benefits. And the authorities refuse to negotiate with the workers' union.

The Haft Tapeh workers and their union are demanding full payment of wage and benefit arrears; recognition of the union as the workers' legal representative; and the company's return to government ownership.
