Due to a number of active campaigns this month, we are taking the extraordinary step of postponing our SEA members meeting until Tues. October 10 at 5:30 pm, Fernwood Hall, 1923 Fernwood Rd. This is not a decision we have taken lightly, but since a dozen SEA members are actively involved with Nathalie Chambers' campaign for election to Saanich Council, and other members are actively involved in campaigns relating to indigenous solidarity, pipelines and housing rights, there is no day this month that is a good fit, without drawing members' time and resources from other SEA-endorsed campaigns.
We look forward to seeing you on October 10th to discuss priorities for action in the months ahead!

In this tense and immersive tour de force, audiences are taken directly into the line of fire between powerful, opposing Peruvian leaders who will stop at nothing to keep their respective goals intact. On the one side is President Alan Garcia, who, eager to enter the world stage, begins aggressively extracting oil, minerals, and gas from untouched indigenous Amazonian land. He is quickly met with fierce opposition from indigenous leader Alberto Pizango, whose impassioned speeches against Garcia’s destructive actions prove a powerful rallying cry to throngs of his supporters. When Garcia continues to ignore their pleas, a tense war of words erupts into deadly violence.

The film won an award at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival and is a riveting account of how an indigenous community struggles to protect its land from the intrusive extractive industry.

The film presents Costa Rica’s inspiring path of demilitarization. Over 60 years ago, Costa Rica became one of the only nations in the world to disband their military and to redirect national resources towards education, health, and the environment. “A Bold Peace” was released in 2015 and challenges our thinking about war and peace. Join in the discussion after the film with members of the Vancouver Island Peace and Disarmament Network (VIDPN). Hosted by the Cadboro Bay United Church and co-sponsored by VIPDN, KAIROS, the Canadian Voice of Women for Peace and the Raging Grannies. We will also do a short action for the international Peace Wave that evening.

FUNKY FUNDRAISER FOR THE WALBRAN!
Join us and dance through the night, from dusk to dawn, on the Autumn equinox at the Sunset Room to celebrate and raise awareness and funds to help save some of the last and most magnificent temperate rainforests in the world in the heart of the Walbran Valley ( unceded Pacheedaht territory), south Vancouver Island.
Victoria-born and Bali-based DJ Alex Joy ( Joy Collective and Rainforest Pavillion, a fusion of electronic dance music and ecological conservation culture) and an exciting line up of home town heroes including Mr Moe, J-Feud and Jon Galssey and DJ D.jon and Taste of Tea, will serve up the music to keep you dancing all night long.
This event is happening on the territory of the Lekwungen peoples of the Songhees and Esquimault nations and is supporting the work of the Friends of Carmanah/Walbran, a local Victoria, 100% volunteer-based collective working to protect and providing public access to the threatened heart of the Walbran valley, a rare world-class ecological heritage of ancient temperate rainforest, 3.5 hours drive from downtown Victoria.

City Councillor Ben Isitt will lead a bike ride at 1 pm on Sunday, Sept 24th to learn about the challenges, struggles, and victories of social movements in Victoria
This is a shorter ride (10-15 km) that starts and ends at Centennial Square.
Please note that bicycles must be in good working condition and that helmets are required. All GVCC rides are by donation ($5 suggested). See you there!
