Dear Friends of SJS,

Please join us.

Christ Church Cathedral, the Community Social Planning Council of Victoria, the Community Action Plan on Poverty, TAPs (Together Against Poverty Society), Umbrella Society for Addictions and Mental Health and the University of Victoria’s Interdisciplinary Program in Social Justice Studies are hosting a conference entitled From Charity to Social Justice: Addressing Child and Family Poverty on Thursday, October 2, from 7 to 8:45 p.m. and on Friday, October 3rd, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The event will be held at Christ Church Cathedral, on Quadra Street at Rockland. Lunch will be provided on Friday.

Our keynote speakers are: John Greschner, B.C.’s Deputy Representative for Children and Youth; Adrienne Montani, Provincial Coordinator, First Call: BC Child and Youth Advocacy Coalition; Scott Clark, Executive Director, Aboriginal Life In Vancouver Enhancement (ALIVE) Society; and Stephen Portman, Legal Advocate, Together Against Poverty Society (TAPS).

We would greatly appreciate... participation from community or service organizations like yours which work with children and families living in poverty or which work to address poverty in our communities. We are particularly interested in hearing your stories about how poverty impacts the people you serve and what are some of the exciting things you are doing within your organization to end child and family poverty. There are various ways that your organization and its staff, board members, or clients can participate in the conference:

· Attend the conference and encourage others to attend as well. It is free and open to the public, although we do ask individuals to preregister at http://bit.ly/From_Charity_to_Social_Justice

· Reserve an information table where one or more members of your organization will be available during breaks on Thursday evening and Friday during the day to answer questions and provide information about your organization and its programs (contact Hilary Marks at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to reserve a table)

· Provide information sheets, rack cards, or poster boards about your organization and its programs. These will be available at the venue for the taking or the viewing by those who attend the conference. (Please let Hilary Marks at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. know that you will be providing us with information and what format that information will take).

Could you please let Hilary know by September 17th if and how your organization can participate in the conference. If you have any questions, please contact a member of the organizing committee for more information.

Sincerely,
