Amplify: stop BC Hydro from destroying eagles nests on the Peace River r1 ...

BC Hydro wants to cut down eagles nests to make way for the Site C Dam.

It's just one of the many ways the province is allowing Hydro to forge ahead with the Site C Dam while First Nations court challenges are still in process.

First Nations are outraged: and they're not going to allow this desecration on their territory.

This week, Treaty 8 First Nations applied for an injunction to protect the eagles from BC Hydro. They are calling out to allies and friends for an injection of funds to cover this new legal proceeding.

The injunction is a short-term measure. In the long term, we trust that Treaty 8's legal challenges, supported by RAVEN, will put a stop to the $8.8-billion dam. It has taken Treaty 8 Nations years to have their day in court, and they are backed by hundreds of citizens and supporters who have donated, fundraised, and sounded the alarm on their behalf.

Shockingly, even though those court cases are still pending, BC Hydro is barrelling ahead in the most disrespectful manner possible: by removing some 28 eagles nests starting September 1. The nests slated for removal represent half of the large raptor nests in the Peace River corridor between Hudson’s Hope and the Alberta border.

Time is short. Here is some of what is being wrongfully carried out without consent:
  • destruction of eagle nests along the river and river islands;
  • clearing, grubbing, surface-stripping and excavation of 163 archaeological and heritage sites, including potential unmarked gravesites;
  • destruction of beaver dams and lodges, and the killing of beavers
  • clearing of irreplaceable rare old-growth and mature forests along the lower Moberly River
  • destruction of wildlife, habitat, and traditional plants and medicines.
The injunction filed by Treaty 8 First Nations states: "Of particular concern is the clearing of the South Bank of the Peace River Valley, which represents extensive, severe and irreversible losses to ecological and cultural resources that support the meaningful exercise of Treaty rights."

Says Treaty 8 member Susan Auger, “Eagles are something that are very significant to myself and my culture. It’s something that has got my blood boiling that they are going to come and cut down eagle nests."

The injunction hearing will be in court August 18 and 19: if Treaty 8 wins this injunction, BC Hydro's work stops. No more damage is done. The permits will face the eagle-eye of judicial scrutiny that may render them invalid.

We need to raise $50,000 to cover the costs of this important action.
