Thank you, PAOV.

Our hardworking team much appreciates your encouragement and your support as we tackle 6 legal fundraising campaigns — with a 7th on the horizon (stay tuned). It means a lot to have you with us, as we celebrate our achievements together. So: brew up a cup of tea and join us for a spring edition of "News from the Nest".

Yukon First Nations in Supreme Court today!

The Tr'ondëk Hwëch'in, Na-cho Nyak Dun, and Vuntut Gwitchin Nations are in the Supreme Court of Canada today to defend the iconic Peel watershed and the integrity of treaties. This will be the culmination of a three-year legal battle to protect 80 per cent of the Peel watershed from mining, oil and gas extraction. Since launching the campaign in January, we have raised more than half of our $210,000 goal for the Peel campaign. We send thank-you’s and appreciation to all of the donors who have contributed to this landmark campaign. If you haven’t already donated, please consider this important cause. Let’s make sure that when the Yukon Nations enter that courtroom, they know we have their back!

“Upstream Voices” Raises the Roof in Vancouver for Skeena salmon

In the words of Grand Chief Stewart Phillip: “They couldn’t have picked a worse place for this LNG facility. What an incredibly stupid idea this is to build this massive LNG plant right in the cradle of the Skeena River salmon fishery, which is the second strongest salmon run in the province of B.C.”

A feisty crowd of nearly 200 braved a snowy evening in Vancouver/Coast Salish Territories to raise more than $7500 and hear Hereditary Chiefs and Elders from the Skeena tell the story of their defence of Skeena salmon and traditional territories from the proposed Petronas LNG project. Check out the event highlights on video: https://vimeo.com/209020396. You can get more info at: https://raventrust.com/2017/03/20/upstream-voices-raises-the-roof-in-vancouver/

The 2017 Young Scholars Essay Prize is on the horizon. RAVEN recognizes masters indigenous students who are asking questions about the topics that we know to be important. The essay competition is open to all disciplines in the social sciences and humanities. Papers from all methodological and theoretical standpoints will be considered: submissions may be made from papers already written as part of normal coursework. This year we are opening the competition Canada-wide, and have increased the prizes: $2000 for first prize, and $1000 for second prize. Stay tuned for spring application details!!

And finally, RAVEN is moving - but not far ☺. We will be moving up to the fifth floor of the same building in downtown Victoria at 620 View Street. The expansion of programs required an increase in staff, and we have quite literally outgrown our nest. The moving date, hopefully, after a second coat of paint, a sink install, some IT wiring, and some office plants... is April 1st! Come celebrate with us at RAVEN’s 8th birthday party at the Auntie Kate benefit concert April 1st (details above). We will also have a separate ‘office warming’ in the coming weeks.

Thank you for all that you do and for flying high with us!

Sincerely,

Susan Smitten & the RAVEN team
