Did BC just sink Kinder Morgan and Site C?

Did BC just sink Kinder Morgan and Site C? r1 ...

Make sure deadly mega-projects go down!

Dear Paov,

This has been one of the most nail-biting BC elections I can remember. Not to mention the longest.

We are now at a historic moment and your hard work and support got us here. That calls for a celebration! Thank you for being such an important part of history.

You enabled us to sound the alarm over Kinder Morgan’s proposed tar sands pipeline and put this campaign at the forefront of BC’s election issues.

Your commitment to defend endangered species across this province with legislation led to more than 40,000 petition signatures and two private member's bills submitted by the NDP and Green parties.

Ken and Arlene Boon

One really important story stands out in my mind today. In 2010, I received a call to attend a meeting with the West Moberly First Nation and Peace Valley farmers in Victoria. They asked us to join them and other people from the Peace River Valley to fight to stop the Site C dam from flooding their home territory.

I vividly remember what I said and it stands true today — “Yes we will join the fight because our supporters would expect us to.”

The good news is the BC NDP and BC Greens, who are expected to form the new BC government, have agreed to send the Site C dam project to the BC Utilities Commission. There it will be reviewed so that ratepayers and taxpayers can be protected from this extremely expensive, useless white elephant of a mega-project. This seems like the best way to investigate – then terminate – the terribly damaging Site C dam project.

The GreeNDP have said that while they wait for the BC Utilities Commission to complete its review — work at the dam site will continue.

It is important to British Columbians that we prepare a fair transition for the Site C workers. At the same time, we demand that the new government ensure no homes are bulldozed, no First Nations sacred sites are ruined and no more purchase contracts are signed in these final weeks of dam work.

Will you write to the leaders of the NDP and Green parties and ask them to ensure no further damage to the Peace River Valley occurs?

Write your letter today!

Let our new leaders know how much you appreciate their commitment to the First Nations and farmers in the Peace Valley — like our friends Arlene and Ken Boon, and the West Moberly First Nations — and that it is absolutely imperative no further damage be done.

BC Hydro has given a one month reprieve to residents of the valley who were prepared for eviction and NDP Leader John Horgan has called for an end for property expropriation in the interim. Your urgent action now can and will lead to positive progress in saving the Peace River Valley from the Site C dam.

As I write these words, I am reminded that the words we say and write matter. They have brought us to this point — where we can see the preservation of the beautiful Peace River Valley finally within our grasp.

Join me in taking the next step towards the end of the Site C Dam. Write your letter now.

For a wilder BC,
